The Conflict(s)

Jorge Enrique, the Eccoterra leader, wants me to understand the unique nature of Cajamarca and the threat the mine poses. This is early in the interview and unprompted by me:

Unlike projects in other areas of Latin America, Cajamarca is a very special area because it is not a desert. It is full of inhabitants and it is dedicated to the agricultural industry. It is close to a capital city like Ibagué, for example. The main road that protects the capital of Bogota and the Pacific Coast goes through Cajamarca. The population is high and there are a lot of people in the farms.

Jorge Enrique is right that the proximity to a major city sets the Cajamarca mine apart from many other extractive projects. ‘The property that the farmers get […] are small properties, which is why there are so many people there.’ To develop a mine, the company ‘needs the soil, so they must get the land from [the farmers’] hands. The farmers, they only know how to make agricultural activities so even if they have a payment for their lands, they don’t have any place to go because they don’t know how to do anything besides doing the agricultural activities’.
